Our Firm

History of HSA Engineering Consulting Services, Inc.

Established in 1995, Hathaway, Symonds & Associates, Inc. was originally an architectural and engineering firm that was located in an old home on Duncan Avenue in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The two original founders were Mr. Scott Hathaway, an architect with a passion for creative and exquisite designs that bring joy to communities all over the mid-south; and Mr. John Symonds, a mechanical engineer with extensive knowledge in industrial, medical and municipal areas.

Mr. M. Scott Archer joined Hathaway, Symonds & Associates in 1998 as a mechanical engineer and later became a Partner in 2000. Mr. Archer has a vast amount of knowledge covering many areas of design and specializes in the design of educational, commercial and healthcare facilities.

In 2001 the name was changed to Hathaway, Symonds & Archer, Inc. and the office was moved to where it resided, until 2017, at 5701 Euper Lane, Suite A, Fort Smith, Arkansas. HSA relocated to the Chaffee Historic District in Fort Smith at the beginning of 2018; where the owners renovated a military warehouse to accommodate the growth in company size.

Mr. Hathaway decided to pursue opportunities outside the company in late 2003. By this time the engineering side of the company had become known as a reputable team of engineers and Mr. Symonds and Mr. Archer re-established the firm as an engineering only firm as it remains to this day.

Following Mr. Hathaway’s departure, the name was changed to HSA Engineering Consulting Services, Inc. in 2004 and the decision was made that the name would remain the same even when Partnerships changed hands. Currently, two of the founders still remain with the company, Mr. John Symonds and Mr. M. Scott Archer.

In 2005, Mr. Robert May was brought on as a partner. His background in mechanical engineering design with an in depth knowledge of contracting and an intuitive talent for mechanical design is a great asset to the company. Mr. May quickly became one of HSA’s primary principal mechanical project designers. He continues today as HSA’s principal in charge of project production.

Mr. Charles Raef was made a partner in October 2005 and brought to the company an extensive knowledge of electrical engineering and electrical contracting. His background as the owner of an electrical contracting company along with his experience as an electrical engineering designer rounded out the company’s ownership expertise in MEP design.

Mr. Trey White, the last Partner brought aboard, has been with HSA since 2008. In 2009, he made the move to Conway where he opened HSA’s satellite office and continues to manage a team of engineers. He is a mechanical engineer with a broad knowledge of mechanical design related to the electrical power industry. Since joining HSA, Mr. White has gained broad MEP project management experience.

HSA has a highly competent and trained staff of eight professional engineers, two of whom are LEED Accredited Professionals.

The remainder of the staff is comprised of four degreed engineer interns, seven designer/drafting technicians, a construction supervisor and administrative support personnel committed to working with you to ensure a high-quality and successful project.
